Gym Honors 94-Year-Old Fitness Buff
There's many different people at the gym: the young, the old, the super-intense -- and then there is Edwin Hammond.
"If you're a guest walking through the gym, there's a pretty good chance he'll shake your hand and give you a candy," said Craig Boyarsky, the fitness director at the Best Fitness in Schenectady, where Edwin has become a staple.
He's not only there to better himself physically, but also to bring joy to every person he encounters.
"I always carry a pocket full of candies," Hammond said.
But on Wednesday, it was the turn of the team at Best Fitness to bring some joy to Edwin, as he celebrated his 94th birthday.
"I've made a lot of friends up here in seven years," Hammond said.
But what makes Edwin an even bigger inspiration than just his positive attitude or his good-will mission through pieces of candy is his stamina. At 94, he still puts other gym members to shame, and as soon as the cake was gone, he got down to business.
"I do six miles on the bicycle, then I have five machines I lift weights on," he said.
That's right -- six miles on the bike, three days a week.
"Honestly, other members come in and look at him and hope to do half of what he does," Boyarsky said.
And it's probably not that often at the gym to see a full smile on someone after each set, but for Edwin, that's just who he is -- and his family, both his actual and gym family, wouldn't have it any other way.
